ECHO Iraq: Who Will Resolve the Currency Change Controversy and Reassure Iraqis?

Baghdad: The Eco-Iraq Observatory condemned on Sunday what it described as the government’s confused discourse regarding the announcement of sensitive economic and monetary decisions, including changing the national currency, through unqualified entities, amidst the silence of the Central Bank of Iraq and the Ministry of Finance.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the observatory stated in a press release that managing a matter as significant as the national currency through scattered statements, instead of clear official conferences and statements issued by the relevant monetary and financial authorities, reflects a weakness in government coordination. This approach, they argue, opens the door to rumors, speculation, and market disruption, harming citizens and the country.

The observatory warned that ambiguity surrounding the national currency issue could affect citizens’ confidence in the dinar and increase demand for foreign currencies and gold, exacerbating market anxiety. Eco-Iraq held the Central Bank and the Ministry of Finance responsible for clarifying the decision, calling for an official statement explaining the reasons for the currency change, the implementation mechanisms, and the timeline, along with guarantees to protect citizens’ savings and maintain market stability.
