Electoral Commission Explores Unified Card for Voting Process


Baghdad: The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) is in discussions with the Ministry of Interior about incorporating the unified national identity card into the electoral process.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, the IHEC announced in a press release that a meeting was held by the committee overseeing the technical and legal aspects of the unified national identity card. The meeting was led by Vice-Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Judge Fayyad Yassin Al-Bajari, and included Board members Judge Abbas Al-Fatlawi and Judge Imad Faris, along with Muhannad Fadhil Abbas, the Technical Assistant to the Head of the Electoral Administration for Technical Affairs, Rahim Nasser, Director of the Legal Department, and other technical committee members. The meeting took place at the National Office headquarters.



The IHEC further disclosed that the discussion centered around the Ministry of Interior’s proposals concerning the data on the unified national identity card and the feasibility of its adoption in the biometric electoral process. Additionally, they examined conducting a simulation of the voting process using the unified card and the results acceleration devices specifically for employees in the Civil Status Directorate.



The IHEC emphasized that the technical and legal committee is maintaining regular meetings with the Ministry of Interior’s technical staff to advance the simulation process using the unified national identity card in the electoral process.
