Baghdad: Electricity officials have attributed the ongoing power shortage to “excesses” on the grid and a reduction in gas supplies due to a regional war impacting the area. The Ministry of Electricity has called for cooperation from citizens to overcome what they describe as a “crisis.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry of Electricity has stated that illegal connections to the grid and reduced gas supplies caused by the regional conflict are key factors contributing to the electricity shortage. The ministry has urged citizens to cooperate in addressing these issues to alleviate the crisis.

In a recent statement, the ministry expressed its awareness of the difficulties faced by citizens due to reduced electricity supply, especially as temperatures rise and demand for power increases. The ministry highlighted the exceptional circumstances imposed by a surge in power loads, aging infrastructure, and the urgent need for financial allocations to expedite rehabilitation and expansion projects. These challenges have significantly affected the power supply available to citizens.

The ministry assured that its staff are working tirelessly across all governorates to implement technical solutions, enhance the readiness of production units, and accelerate transmission and distribution projects. They are striving to make the best use of all available resources to improve supply levels and restore stability to the electricity grid swiftly.

The ministry emphasized the importance of continuous cooperation from all parties, stating that rationalizing energy consumption, reducing waste, and reporting violations on the electricity network are crucial steps. These efforts are expected to help reduce loads, improve supply hours, and positively impact the service provided to citizens.
