Baghdad: The Ministry of Electricity confirmed on Monday that the principles of the agreement with France’s Total Energies pave the way for discussions and negotiations regarding the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The plan involves regasifying the LNG and transporting it via the national gas pipeline network to supply power generation plants.

According to Iraqi News Agency, a statement from the Ministry of Electricity noted that under the auspices of Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi, Electricity Minister Ali Saadi Waheeb signed the agreement principles in Paris on Monday. The deal is between the General Company for Electric Power Production (Southern Region) and Total Energies (Gas and Power division), aligning with the Ministry’s plans to secure and diversify fuel sources required to operate power generation plants.

The agreement principles pave the way for discussions and negotiations to supply LNG by deploying a floating terminal to Iraqi ports in Basra Governorate. The gas will then be converte
d back to its gaseous state and fed into the national pipeline network to supply power generation plants.

According to the statement, this step aligns with the Ministry of Electricity’s strategy to bolster and diversify fuel supplies, support the stable operation of power plants, and increase hours and stability of electricity supply.
