Baghdad: The European Union has praised the people of Iraq for participating in the parliamentary elections held on 11 November. This electoral process is seen as a significant step for Iraq in bolstering its democratic institutions, promoting inclusiveness, ensuring accountability, and shaping its political landscape.
According to Nam News Network, the organization acknowledges the efforts of the Iraqi authorities, the Independent High Electoral Commission, and civil society in organizing and facilitating the electoral process. In response to an invitation from the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission, the EU deployed an Election Expert Mission to evaluate the electoral procedure, and its findings will be shared with Iraqi authorities.
Preliminary reports suggest that voter turnout was higher compared to the elections in 2021 and 2018. The EU now urges political actors in Iraq to support the formation of a government that truly represents the will of its citizens.
The EU reiterates its strong support for Iraq’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Given the changing geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East, Iraq’s stability is considered particularly crucial. The EU remains committed to supporting Iraq as a partner in advancing its democratic and reformist goals, aiming for a peaceful future.
