Feridun Sinirlioglu Pledges Neutrality in UN Secretary-General Bid

New York City:Istanbul Turkish diplomat Feridun Sinirlioglu, Turkey’s candidate for the position of UN Secretary-General, has emphasized his commitment to acting as a “neutral and independent Secretary-General” if elected. Sinirlioglu, who has extensive diplomatic experience, made the remarks during a press conference at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Sinirlioglu stated that neutrality and independence are essential for the role, highlighting that he is running as a candidate for his country without representing it. He underscored his dedication to fulfilling his duties transparently and impartially, in line with the United Nations Charter and international law.

Sinirlioglu, a former Turkish foreign minister and the current Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, pointed out the challenging phase the international community is currently facing. He stressed the importance of multilateral institutions like the United Nations in maintaining global peace and security. He remarked on the irreplaceable nature of the UN, asserting the need for an effective organization.

Discussing his qualifications, Sinirlioglu expressed confidence in his readiness and suitability for the role, citing his vast experience and competencies. He also addressed the potential reform of the UN and its charter, noting that such changes should be initiated by member states, with the Secretary-General’s role being to facilitate consensus.

Turkey officially nominated Sinirlioglu in late October, following a decision by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Sinirlioglu’s diplomatic career includes serving as Turkey’s foreign minister in 2015 and as the country’s permanent representative to the United Nations from 2016 to 2023.
