New york: Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein affirmed Iraq’s firm position calling for a political solution in Syria. A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein met today, Sunday, in New York with the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, in the presence of National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the two sides discussed developments in various Syrian regions, with a focus on their impact on regional stability. Regarding the political solution track, Pedersen reviewed the UN’s efforts to support the political process in Syria. For his part, Fuad Hussein affirmed Iraq’s firm position calling for a political solution that guarantees the participation of all Syrian factions without exclusion or marginalization.

The discussion also touched on the conditions of the camps, most notably al-Hol camp, where Iraq has previously hosted international conferences related to this issue. The importance of countries withdrawing their nationals from these camps was emphasized, as a prelude to their closure and addressing the humanitarian repercussions of the crisis.

The UN envoy praised Iraq’s pivotal role and its efforts in bringing the views of the Syrian parties closer together, emphasizing that Syria’s stability is a crucial factor for the stability of Iraq and the entire region, especially since developments in Syria directly impact Iraqi security.
