Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Portuguese Counterpart Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Ties in Lisbon

Lisbon: Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with the Portuguese Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in Lisbon to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations and international coordination.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release stating that Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein engaged in discussions with Portuguese Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel during his official visit to Portugal. The meeting focused on developing bilateral relations and enhancing joint cooperation in various fields.

During the discussions, Minister Hussein highlighted Iraq's commitment to strengthening its relationship with Portugal and emphasized the need to resume political consultations between the foreign ministries of both nations. He also underscored the importance of reopening the Portuguese embassy in Baghdad and extended an invitation for a visit to Iraq, aimed at broadening cooperation and reinforcing the partnership between the two countries.

The meeting explored opportunities for collaboration in the areas of economy, renewable energy, water resources, education, scientific research, and culture. The ministers also discussed facilitating the exchange of official visits and finalizing bilateral agreements currently in the pipeline.

The statement further noted an exchange of views on significant regional and international issues. Minister Hussein reaffirmed Iraq's stance on advocating dialogue and peaceful approaches to crisis resolution and emphasized maintaining stability, particularly concerning regional security, stability, and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The dialogue also encompassed recent developments in the Middle East, counterterrorism efforts, prospects for cooperation with the European Union and NATO, and enhancing coordination within international organizations.

Additionally, the parties discussed enhancing coordination between Iraq and Portugal at international forums, supporting mutual nominations, and addressing issues of common interest to consolidate security, stability, and fortify the bilateral partnership.
