Baghdad: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein reaffirmed Iraq’s firm commitment to human rights principles and constructive cooperation with the United Nations system. A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein delivered the Republic of Iraq Deputy’s address via video conference at the high-level segment of the 61st session of the Human Rights Council, held in Geneva. He began by congratulating the Council President on his election, emphasizing Iraq’s support for the Human Rights Council’s efforts and its pivotal role in promoting human dignity and safeguarding fundamental rights and freedoms.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Minister reiterated Iraq’s firm commitment to human rights principles and constructive cooperation with the United Nations system. He noted that Iraq’s election to the Human Rights Council is both an honor and a responsibility, reflecting its keenness to actively contribute to supporting dialogue and strengthening international cooperation.
The statement added that the Foreign Minister addressed the parliamentary elections held on November 11, 2015, under UN and international supervision, affirming that they constituted an important democratic milestone that strengthened confidence in constitutional institutions, coinciding with the completion of the constitutional requirements for forming a government.
The Minister also highlighted the security progress achieved by Iraq. ‘The economic and social progress achieved in recent years has been reflected in improved development indicators and enhanced internal stability,’ he emphasized, adding that ‘Iraq’s constitutional system is based on the principles of democracy and federalism, guaranteeing the rights of national and religious groups to political participation and the free practice of their religious rites, within a framework of respect for diversity and the consolidation of the principles of citizenship.’
The statement further explained that ‘the Foreign Minister also addressed the termination of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) on December 31, 2025, considering it a step that reflects the international community’s confidence in Iraq’s national capabilities,’ reiterating ‘Iraq’s commitment to protecting the rights of children and women, and reviewing periodic reports related to international agreements.’ In closing, ‘The Minister reaffirmed Iraq’s support for the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, its support for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and the need to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid.’
