Baghdad: Former MP Haider al-Mulla, associated with the Azm Alliance, has been sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment. The Criminal Court handed down the sentence for his actions in promoting and glorifying the dissolved Ba’ath Party.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the conviction was based on al-Mulla’s use of the phrase ‘Saddamite Karkh’ in 2021, which the court deemed to be in violation of the laws prohibiting the promotion of the Ba’ath Party. Al-Mulla’s comments were viewed as an attempt to revitalize support for the party, which has been banned following its dissolution.
The case has attracted attention due to al-Mulla’s political affiliations and the sensitive history surrounding the Ba’ath Party in Iraq. The court’s decision underscores the ongoing efforts to curb any resurgence of the party’s influence in the country’s political landscape.
