Baghdad:The Federal Integrity Commission announced the successful extradition of a fugitive convicted of embezzling nearly IQD 4 billion from the Wasit Health Directorate. This individual was handed over by Lebanese authorities after being apprehended.
According to Iraqi News Agency, the commission’s Recovery Department prepared the necessary documentation for the extradition of Alia Hassouni, who previously worked for the Wasit Health Directorate. Her arrest and return to Iraq were facilitated through collaboration with the Arab and International Police Directorate (Interpol) and relevant authorities.
The commission emphasized the operation’s success due to persistent international pursuit and collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, judicial authorities, and the Iraqi Embassy in Lebanon. The convict, during her tenure at the directorate, embezzled a total of IQD 3,779,032,824.
The Wasit Criminal Court had previously reviewed and found sufficient evidence to convict Hassouni of embezzling public funds. Consequently, a life imprisonment sentence was issued in absentia, requiring her to repay the embezzled amount. The affected party retains the right to seek further compensation after the judgment is finalized.
