Giz: The German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) in Iraq affirmed on Wednesday its support for Iraqi solutions aimed at promoting stability and preventing violence, noting that preventing violent extremism is a societal responsibility that extends beyond security forces.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Florian Hansen, head of the agency’s project to support stability and prevent violence, stated that preventing violent extremism is not solely the responsibility of security forces. Instead, it is a comprehensive societal responsibility that requires strengthening belonging, creating opportunities for participation, especially for young people, and addressing grievances peacefully.

He further explained that sustainable prevention begins long before violence occurs, by providing credible alternatives to harmful narratives and creating spaces for citizens to express themselves, interact with others, and contribute to their communities. Hansen elaborated that art, sports, storytelling, and film can effectively support prevention efforts. These mediums have the power to connect with people emotionally, foster dialogue across social divides, and present positive narratives rooted in Iraqi society.
