Google Expands AI Overviews, Sparks Controversy Among Users and Publishers

Mountain view: Google’s AI Overviews, a feature that has sparked controversy since its initial rollout in May 2024, is undergoing further expansion. Users have expressed frustration over the lack of an easy removal option for the feature, while major publishers are concerned about potential revenue impacts.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Google is enhancing the depth and detail of the AI Overviews displayed in Google Search. Some users have reported the removal of the “Show More” button for select searches, leading to immediate AI Mode activation and relegating traditional blue links further down the search results page.

Social media users have noted that Google is providing full AI responses similar to those seen in AI Mode. Additionally, search pages occasionally preload the “Ask anything” box, facilitating further queries on the topic.

Google confirmed these changes in a statement to SEO Roundtable, emphasizing that the updates would not apply universally. “AI Overviews only dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it to be most useful. If you’ve already started scrolling, the expansion stops to keep your place,” tweeted Robby Stein, Google VP of Product for AI Search.

Stein also mentioned that Google is continually testing and adjusting these experiences, aiming to refine them based on user feedback.
