Baghdad: National team coach Graham Arnold expressed his delight at returning to Baghdad, stating that his goal is to elevate Iraq to the second-highest ranking in Asia and secure direct qualification for the World Cup.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Arnold spoke at a press conference Monday evening, outlining his strategic approach for the Gulf Cup and the Asian Cup. Arnold emphasized that participation in tournaments is not merely for enjoyment, but to achieve specific objectives. He has initiated the process of monitoring Iraqi league matches and those of professional players to ensure the best talent is selected, with plans to attend most league matches starting immediately. Arnold stressed that players aiming for a spot on the national team must consistently strive for excellence, maintain physical fitness, and perform well at their clubs.

Arnold noted that forming the Gulf Cup squad is still premature, but he regards the tournament as crucial for both himself and the players who are selected. He highlighted Iraq’s pool of young talents both locally and internationally, as well as promising players in the Olympic team, which can be harnessed for future success.

He also mentioned the detailed report he prepared about the national team’s performance in the World Cup, underscoring his current focus on future developments. Arnold is working closely with the president of the federation, Younis Mahmoud, and the director of the national teams department, Mohammed Nasser, to plan upcoming steps.

Arnold revealed ongoing discussions with the Iraqi Football Association regarding the inclusion of a local assistant coach in the technical staff. Although offered a four-year contract extension, Arnold believes a six-month extension aligns better with maintaining passion and progress. He also shared that his family supports his decision to remain in Iraq, expressing their happiness following the team’s World Cup qualification.
