Health Ministry Prioritizes Drug Combating Efforts for 2025-2030

Baghdad: The Ministry of Health affirmed today its continued efforts to develop drug addiction treatment and mental health services, highlighting that combating drugs is among its strategic priorities for the period 2025-2030. The Ministry indicated its reliance on five factors to support the treatment plan.

According to Iraqi News Agency, the representative and advisor to the Minister of Health, Jamal Al-Muhammadawi, stated during the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking celebration that the Ministry of Health is committed to collaborating with all state institutions to protect Iraqi society from drugs. He emphasized the importance of a national partnership in prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation efforts.

Al-Muhammadawi highlighted that addressing the drug challenge requires a national responsibility shared among state institutions, the judiciary, security agencies, educational institutions, media outlets, civil society organizations, and families. He underlined the need for integrated national policies that focus on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and distribution networks.

From the Ministry's perspective, combating drugs is crucial for protecting public health. The Ministry aims to strengthen mental health services, develop addiction treatment and rehabilitation, and expand health education programs. These efforts align with the National Strategy for Combating Drugs and Psychotropic Substances for 2025-2030.

He further noted that drug users are considered patients deserving of treatment and rehabilitation, stressing the importance of a supportive environment for recovery and societal reintegration. The success of these programs, he argued, also hinges on stringent legal actions against drug trafficking networks.

Al-Muhammadawi emphasized that the success of the national fight against drugs is not solely measured by seizures or legal actions but also by the ability to prevent harm, provide comprehensive services, and integrate recovering addicts back into society. He stated that the Ministry will continue to enhance addiction treatment and mental health services, emphasizing coordination among relevant parties to improve the national response to drug challenges.

The message conveyed was one of hope and responsibility, focusing on building a healthier society and protecting Iraqi youth. Al-Muhammadawi expressed gratitude to national and international partners working in prevention, treatment, and control, affirming the Ministry's commitment to implementing sustainable initiatives to safeguard future generations.
