Tehran: The Iraqi News Agency (INA) publishes the text of the joint statement issued by the Republic of Iraq and the Islamic Republic of Iran at the conclusion of Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi’s visit to Tehran, as released by the Prime Minister’s Media Office.
According to Iraqi News Agency, the visit by Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi to Tehran was initiated at the invitation of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Prime Minister led a high-level delegation comprising senior political, security, and economic officials. During the visit, discussions were held with the President of Iran and several senior Iranian officials, focusing on bilateral relations, regional developments, and international issues of mutual interest. Both sides emphasized their determination to continue a constructive approach and further strengthen strategic cooperation.
The leaders agreed to prepare a comprehensive strategic document aimed at expanding cooperation between Iraq and Iran in political, economic, cultural, and security areas. This document is to be finalized by the Foreign Ministers of both countries for eventual signature and implementation by their senior leadership. The statement highlighted the fraternal ties between the peoples of Iraq and Iran and the necessity of advancing bilateral relations across various sectors.
A key outcome of the visit was the agreement to convene the Iraq-Iran Supreme Joint Committee annually, alternating between the two capitals. This committee will facilitate further strengthening of bilateral relations. The visit also marked Iran’s appreciation for Iraq’s hospitality during the funeral of the martyred Imam, Grand Ayatollah Khamenei, highlighting the occasion’s significance in strengthening the bonds between the two nations.
Economic cooperation was a major focus, with both countries recognizing the potential for increased bilateral trade and joint investments. They agreed to expedite projects like the Basra-Shalamcheh railway and enhance cooperation in energy, transportation, and other sectors. Legal and administrative obstacles hindering these efforts are to be addressed, facilitating public and private sector participation.
Environmental cooperation was also emphasized, with both nations agreeing to tackle challenges like climate change and drought through scientific and practical cooperation. Joint mechanisms will be established to address environmental crises and implement sustainable development programs.
In terms of regional security, Iraq and Iran reviewed recent developments and noted shared views on current challenges. Continued consultations were deemed essential for regional security and stability, with emphasis on combating terrorism and organized crime. Cultural and social cooperation was also prioritized, highlighting the importance of religious and civilizational ties in strengthening long-term strategic partnerships.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strategic dialogue, implementing bilateral agreements, and expanding cooperation to promote stability and prosperity in West Asia. They emphasized resolving regional crises through dialogue and diplomacy, supporting peaceful political solutions based on international law.
The joint statement concluded with a reaffirmation of Iraq and Iran’s firm stance on the Palestinian cause, supporting the Palestinian people in achieving their legitimate rights and establishing an independent state with Al-Quds as its capital.
