Industrial Coordination Council Approves New Industrial City in Wasit Governorate

Baghdad: The Industrial Coordination Council has given the green light for the Ministry of Industry and Minerals to proceed with offering an investment opportunity for the development of an industrial city in Al-Suwayrah, Wasit Governorate.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the announcement followed a council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani. The meeting was attended by key officials including the Minister of Finance, the Ministers of Oil, Trade, Industry, and Health, along with several advisers and relevant authorities. The session led to a series of decisions addressing various agenda items. One of the significant outcomes was the approval for using specialized berths (10 and 11) at Khor Al-Zubair Port to facilitate the sponge iron plant’s operations. This decision aligns with the plant’s production capacity and aims to meet export requirements during both the pilot phase and subsequent commercial operations.

In the realm of industrial development, the council sanctioned the Ministry of Industry and Minerals to advance the investment opportunity for the creation of an industrial city in Al-Suwayrah. Additionally, to tackle issues faced by brick factory owners regarding Cabinet Decision No. (24547), a joint team will be established. This team will comprise members from relevant authorities tasked with identifying brick factories in the Al-Nahrawan area that are eligible for conversion to liquefied gas use. The team will also propose practical solutions for providing pipeline networks and central storage tanks to these factories.

The statement concluded with a decision to assign the Ministry of Oil and the Ministry of Natural Resources in the Kurdistan Regional Government to revisit the supply of liquefied gas to licensed brick factories within the region’s governorates.
