Baghdad: The Ministry of Interior affirmed on Tuesday that all Iraqi tribes support the government’s campaign to combat corruption, noting that tribal leaders have announced their intention to disavow anyone found judicially guilty of corruption charges.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Director of the Ministry’s Directorate of Iraqi Tribal Affairs, Major General Salman Al-Hassnawi, stated, “Recently, we have intensified our efforts to hold ongoing seminars and meetings with tribal sheikhs to support the state’s efforts to combat corruption and corrupt individuals and to prevent tribal demands on behalf of those proven guilty of corruption.”

He added, “Tribal sheikhs have played an important role in this regard by providing social support for the government’s efforts to combat corruption,” highlighting that “many issues have been addressed in coordination with the Directorate of Tribal Affairs, including combating drugs, curbing extremist and violent rhetoric that leads to terrorism, promoting moderate and balanced discourse among tribal communities, supporting young people and graduates, assisting orphans and the children of martyrs, and preserving civil and community peace by upholding tribal customs and avoiding excessive tribal compensation demands.”

He explained that, “With regard to corruption, tribal sheikhs have expressed their support for the anti-corruption campaign by disavowing anyone proven by the judiciary to be involved in corruption and convicted accordingly, and by refraining from making tribal compensation demands on their behalf.”
