Baghdad:General Kevin Lambert, the Commander of the International Coalition in Iraq, announced on Wednesday the completion of the Coalition’s mission, emphasizing that Iraq is now ready to take the initiative.
According to the Iraqi News Agency, Lambert made these remarks during an official ceremony held by the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in Baghdad, which was attended by Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi. The event marked “Sovereignty Day” on September 30, 2026.
General Lambert highlighted the historical significance of Iraq, describing it as a land with a rich heritage, including the origins of written communication and codified laws. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by both Iraqi and Coalition forces over the past 12 years, which have culminated in the successful completion of their mission.
The final withdrawal of Coalition forces from their base in Erbil signifies the end of their operations in Iraq. Lambert stressed the importance of vigilance during this transition phase, urging Iraq to address any threats to its security and sovereignty.
He also noted the transition of the security relationship between Coalition militaries to new bilateral frameworks, affirming continued support for Iraq as it moves forward. Lambert expressed optimism for Iraq’s future, envisioning it as a strong, secure, and sovereign nation.
