Baghdad: Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian warned on Saturday against European attempts to reactivate the ‘snapback’ mechanism that reinstates UN sanctions on Tehran, stressing that such moves ‘close the door to understanding and revive the cycle of pressure.’
According to National Iraqi News Agency, in a speech honoring the winners of the 2025 Science Olympiad, Pezeshkian said: ‘Europeans may target facilities like Natanz or Fordow, but they overlook the fact that scientific minds can rebuild and overcome challenges. Human capacities are more important than facilities.’
His remarks came after the UN Security Council on Friday failed to pass a draft resolution aimed at permanently lifting UN sanctions against Iran, which resulted in the reactivation of previous resolutions related to the Iranian nuclear file.
The ‘snapback’ mechanism, part of the 2015 nuclear deal and its corresponding UN resolution, allows the automatic reimposition of sanctions if Iran is found to have violated its core commitments, without requiring consensus within the Security Council.
