Baghdad:The National Investment Commission has announced the adoption of advanced waste management solutions in Iraq, including a project to convert waste into electricity in Baghdad and the use of smart technologies for waste collection in residential complexes. These initiatives aim to reduce environmental pollution, eliminate unregulated dump sites, and improve sustainability standards.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Deputy Chairman of the Commission, Salar Mohammed Amin, highlighted Iraq’s challenges in waste collection and processing, which have led to the proliferation of unregulated dump sites. The Commission has taken initial steps towards waste collection and incineration in Baghdad, collaborating with the Baghdad Governorate, the Mayoralty of Baghdad, the Ministries of Housing and Electricity, and other municipal and service departments. A joint committee from the Prime Minister’s Office has been established to support the project, which will eventually expand to other governorates.
An agreement has been signed with a specialized Chinese company for waste collection in Baghdad. A 5,000-dunum plot of land has been allocated in the Nahrawan area, and administrative procedures for the project are underway, with operations expected to commence in 2027. The process will involve the complete incineration of waste to produce clean electrical energy, adhering to global health and environmental standards, preventing future open-air burning or random waste disposal.
In collaboration with a Spanish company, another project is being developed to collect waste using air-pressure technology through systems installed beneath residential complexes. This initiative is part of the Prime Minister’s plan for modern residential cities and mandates the use of this technology over traditional mobile collection methods.
Previously, the National Investment Commission launched Iraq’s first smart automated waste collection system with the Spanish company URD, marking a significant step towards modernizing waste management and adopting sustainable solutions for modern, smart cities.
