Iraq and Saudi Arabia Commit to Enhanced Cooperation Against Terrorism


Baghdad: Iraq and Saudi Arabia have reached an agreement to bolster cooperation and joint coordination aimed at tackling shared challenges, with a particular focus on combating terrorism. A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs detailed the developments following a round of political consultations held at the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Baghdad.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting brought together Mohammed Hussein Mohammed Bahr al-Uloom, Iraq’s Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Bilateral Relations, and Saud al-Sati, the Saudi Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political and Economic Affairs. This consultation signifies a continuation of the positive momentum in bilateral relations and underscores a mutual commitment to advancing joint cooperation.



Mohammed Bahr al-Uloom articulated Iraq’s desire to deepen collaboration with Saudi Arabia across multiple sectors, highlighting Iraq’s improving security environment and economic growth, which present new investment opportunities. He also emphasized the significance of the “Development Road” project in promoting regional stability and prosperity and discussed potential cooperation in education, culture, training, and scientific research.



Saud al-Sati commended Iraq’s advancements, emphasizing the critical importance of Iraq’s stability for regional security and expressing Saudi Arabia’s dedication to strengthening bilateral ties.



The statement further revealed that both countries deliberated on significant regional and international developments and reached a consensus on enhancing cooperation in confronting terrorism. The Undersecretary acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s constructive role on the international stage, particularly in mediating between Russia and Ukraine, and reiterated Iraq’s commitment to dialogue and its influential role in the region.



Concerning the situation in Syria, Bahr al-Uloom declared Iraq’s support for Syria’s stability and cautioned about the escalating threat posed by ISIS. He also reaffirmed Iraq’s backing for the creation of an independent Palestinian state.



In conclusion, both parties stressed the importance of ongoing coordination to implement their agreements and agreed to intensify consultations to support mutual interests and contribute to the stability and prosperity of the region.
