Baghdad: MP Alia Nassif, representing the Reconstruction and Development Bloc, announced a historic move as Iraq deposited its maritime maps with the United Nations. She emphasized that this act establishes Iraq’s rights under international law.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Nassif highlighted at a press conference that this procedure did not occur during the previous monarchical and republican eras. She noted that depositing these maps is not merely a simple technical procedure but an affirmation of Iraq’s rights under international maritime law.
Nassif further explained that the current government is the first to complete this file after it was neglected in previous periods. She stressed that publishing the maps is an absolute sovereign right of Iraq, while acknowledging Kuwait’s right to object or protest. However, she pointed out that the United Nations does not have the authority to cancel these maps, reinforcing Iraq’s position in delineating its maritime borders.
She mentioned that Iraq has transitioned from a defensive to a proactive stance, urging other parties to prove their maritime boundaries. Nassif also emphasized that Iraq aims to compete with major regional ports like Qatar’s and that, with the completion of the Grand Faw Port, Iraq will have ports that rival those of the entire region. She concluded by stating that no one can change the reality of these maps.
