Iraq Unveils Climate Action Plan for Emissions Reduction by 2035

Baghdad:Iraq has introduced its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to enhance climate action efforts through 2035.

According to Iraqi News Agency, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced the official launch of Iraq’s updated NDC under the Prime Minister’s auspices. This updated framework aims to advance climate action by 2035.

The updated NDC was developed in coordination between Iraq’s Ministry of Environment and the UNDP. It seeks to elevate Iraq’s climate ambitions and integrate climate efforts with economic diversification, energy and water security, resilience building, investment, and sustainable development.

The revised NDC, submitted to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), includes an increased target for reducing emissions. Iraq aims for an unconditional reduction of up to 3 percent below the “business-as-usual” scenario by 2030. By 2035, the target is set to reach up to 5 percent. Additionally, the plan outlines a conditional reduction of up to 17 percent by 2035, dependent on international climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity-building support, potentially achieving a total reduction of 22 percent.

During the launch ceremony, Ihsan Al-Awadi, Director of the Prime Minister’s Office, conveyed a message on behalf of the Prime Minister. He emphasized the document’s significance as a national priority and a practical approach to aligning climate action with economic and social development goals.
