Baghdad: The Geological Survey Authority is spearheading a significant project aimed at developing limestone rock reserves south of Najaf to bolster the cement industry. The Iraqi Geological Survey, part of the Ministry of Industry and Minerals, announced its ongoing efforts to enhance limestone reserves in the Wadi al-Mahari area, south of Najaf Governorate. This initiative seeks to ensure the availability of essential raw materials and promote the sustainability of industrial projects in the cement manufacturing sector.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Dr. Majid Abdul-Amir Kadhim, Director General of the Survey, emphasized that the project is being executed by a specialized team from the Survey’s staff. The team is leveraging results from previous geological surveys and investigations, alongside updated geological databases and maps, to carry out the project effectively.

The work plan comprises conducting surveys, drilling, and collecting rock and core samples to ascertain the quantities and types of limestone. This process ensures the optimal investment of national mineral resources. Dr. Kadhim highlighted that the samples are subjected to field testing and specialized laboratory analyses, which culminate in a comprehensive reserve assessment and the determination of quantities available for investment in cement manufacturing projects.
