Baghdad: The Iraqi government announced a three-day nationwide mourning period following the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, government spokesperson Bassem Al-Awadi extended the government’s deepest condolences to the Iranian people and the broader Islamic nation, describing the incident as a ‘blatant act of aggression and a condemned action that violates humanitarian and moral norms, as well as international laws and conventions.’
The statement added that the late leader ‘crowned a lifetime of service to the Iranian people with martyrdom and steadfast commitment to his principles, defending his nation against injustice and tyranny while advocating for the causes of the Islamic nation and humanity at large.’
The Iraqi government also renewed its call for an immediate and unconditional cessation of military operations that are pushing the region toward unprecedented levels of violence, fueling conflict, and undermining international peace and security.
The statement concluded by formally declaring a three-day period of national mourning across Iraq.
