Rome:National Security Advisor Qasim Al-Aboudi has reiterated the Iraqi government’s unwavering commitment to collaborating with the International Coalition to eradicate the ISIS terrorist organization.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Aboudi made these remarks during the meeting of the International Coalition to Defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria, which took place in Rome. He highlighted the sacrifices of Iraq’s martyrs and emphasized the need to consider the victims and their families in international efforts to combat terrorism and prevent future tragedies.
Al-Aboudi pointed out that the meeting comes at a crucial juncture, marking a significant achievement in Iraq’s partnership with the International Coalition and transitioning to a new phase of cooperation to defeat ISIS and complete the tasks of Operation Inherent Resolve. He noted that the partnership facilitated the return of over twenty thousand Iraqi citizens from Al-Hol camp and their reintegration into society.
He stressed that these achievements were made possible by the sacrifices of the Iraqi people and support from Coalition partners. The focus now shifts from victory over ISIS to enhancing Iraq’s capacity to prevent its resurgence and contribute to regional security and stability.
Al-Aboudi explained that in February 2026, Iraq agreed to transfer several ISIS detainees from northeastern Syria in coordination with the Coalition. Iraqi authorities have worked on these 5,704 cases, completing preliminary investigations and verifying detainees’ citizenship for legal proceedings.
He emphasized the Iraqi judiciary’s unique experience in handling foreign suspects from 62 nationalities, showcasing international confidence in its competence and fairness. Iraq will manage these cases based on bilateral agreements, Iraqi laws, and reciprocity principles.
Al-Aboudi called for international cooperation in addressing detainee issues, urging states to acknowledge their responsibilities and provide logistical support to mitigate security and humanitarian risks. He reaffirmed Prime Minister Ali Falih Al-Zaidi’s commitment to fighting terrorism and violent extremism, enhancing international cooperation, and exchanging information and expertise.
He concluded by asserting the Iraqi government’s dedication to working with the International Coalition to eliminate ISIS as both an ideology and organization, urging the international community to adopt a comprehensive approach addressing root causes for a stable and secure future.
