Baghdad: The Department of Foreign Economic Relations at the Ministry of Trade announced the launch of the ninth session of the Iraqi-Greek Joint Committee in Baghdad, marking the resumption of its meetings after a 24-year hiatus since the last session held in 2000.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meetings commenced under the leadership of Ali Hussein Abdul Amir, Technical Deputy Minister of Construction, Housing, and Public Municipalities, representing the Iraqi side, and Theoharis Theoharis, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece. Representatives from various ministries and relevant institutions from both countries participated in the discussions.
Riyadh Fakher Al-Hashemi, Director General of the Department of Foreign Economic Relations at the Ministry of Trade, expressed that these meetings in Baghdad present an opportunity to renew the strategic partnership between Iraq and Greece, aiming to establish sustainable cooperation based on mutual interests. He highlighted that the outcomes of this session are expected to fortify the economic and trade relations between the two nations.
Al-Hashemi further explained that the Secretariat of Joint Committees between Iraq and other countries, managed by the Ministry of Trade through the Department of Foreign Economic Relations, plays a crucial role in organizing and monitoring the work of these committees. He noted the ministry’s significant contribution in reactivating the Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement between Iraq and Greece.
The head of the Iraqi delegation emphasized that the ninth session of the joint committee represents an essential advancement in rebuilding cooperation between Baghdad and Athens, showcasing a joint commitment to enhance bilateral relations across various sectors. He also pointed out the necessity of supporting the private sector to facilitate access to both Greek and Iraqi markets and reiterated the importance of reactivating the Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement signed in 1976 as a basis for future collaboration.
