Geneva: Minister of Trade, Atheer Dawood Al-Ghurairi, met with the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to discuss the steps required for Iraq’s accession to the organization. The discussions focused on the progress made towards this goal, particularly the work completed by the National Accession Committee, which is chaired by the Minister of Trade, as well as the efforts of technical subcommittees responsible for preparing necessary documents and reports for Iraq’s forthcoming fourth meeting on the matter.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Minister Al-Ghurairi emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation and coordination with the World Trade Organization and its member states to streamline the technical and administrative procedures related to Iraq’s accession. He highlighted the Iraqi government’s dedication to fulfilling all technical and legislative requirements to secure full membership in the organization.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala recognized Iraq’s commitment and ongoing efforts to meet the accession requirements and integrate into the global trading system. She noted that Iraq’s membership would be a valuable addition due to its economic potential and strategic location, which would further strengthen the international trading system.

This initiative marks a significant movement after approximately sixteen years, representing Iraq’s renewed efforts to advance its accession to the World Trade Organization.
