Iraqi National Athletics Team Arrives in South Korea for Asian Championships

Gumi: The Iraqi National Athletics team delegation has arrived in Gumi, South Korea, to participate in the Asian Men's and Women's Championships. The event will take place from May 27 to June 1, 2025, and serves as qualifiers for the World Athletics Championships.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, this participation marks the first competitive stage adopted by the national team's technical staff to evaluate the athletes' level. The performance at this event will help in selecting candidates for the Islamic Solidarity Games, scheduled to be held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia next November.

The Iraqi delegation is led by Ali Lafta and includes a coaching staff composed of Fadel Abbas, pole vault coach; Wassim Marouf, hammer throw coach; Haider Jawad, sprint and hurdles coach; and Walid Jamal, decathlon coach.

The list of athletes representing Iraq includes Saif Raad in the 100m event, Taha Hussein in the 200m and 400m events, Nour El Din Adel in the 400m and 800m events, Saleh Kazim in the 110m hurdles, Mustafa Kazim in the discus throw, Hussein Thamer in the hammer throw, Amir Subaih in the pole vault, and Haman Abdullah in the decathlon.
