Baghdad:Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi announced on Thursday that October 1 marks a significant step towards addressing the issue of weapons outside of state control. The government plans to purchase a complete air defense system and legislate the Popular Mobilization Forces Law.
According to Iraqi News Agency, al-Zaidi expressed congratulations to the Iraqi people on this significant day, October 1, 2026, highlighting the conclusion of the international coalition’s mission in Iraq and the full withdrawal of its forces, which marks the achievement of comprehensive Iraqi sovereignty.
He emphasized that achieving national sovereignty is a proud accomplishment for all Iraqis, attributing this success to the guidance of the supreme religious authority and the collective defense efforts mobilized by Iraqis. These efforts played a crucial role in confronting ISIS alongside the armed forces.
Al-Zaidi noted that the government is committed to addressing weapons outside state control, with a clear roadmap to fulfill constitutional obligations by June 30, 2027. This includes disarming non-Iraqi armed groups on Iraqi territory to maintain security and stability.
The government also reaffirms its commitment to preventing Iraqi territory and airspace from being used for actions that threaten neighboring countries’ security, emphasizing principles of mutual sovereignty and non-interference.
Furthermore, the government will support security institutions by purchasing a complete air defense system and integrating the Popular Mobilization Forces into the security establishment under the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
Al-Zaidi highlighted that as Iraq concludes its phase of wars and sovereignty violations, it aims to enter a new era of national sovereignty, focusing on civil peace, stability, and prosperity, and directing resources towards sustainable development and improving citizens’ lives. This new phase marks Iraq’s journey as a fully sovereign state, governed by its Constitution and committed to balanced international relations.
