Doha: The Ministry of Oil has confirmed that Iraq possesses significant oil and gas resources.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Gas Affairs, Izzat Sabir Ismail, led the Iraqi delegation at the 27th Ministerial Meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Doha. The meeting saw the election of Philippe Mshlabila from Nigeria as the new Secretary-General of the Forum, taking over from Algerian Mohamed Hamel, who served since 2022. The next ministerial meeting is scheduled to be held in Russia in 2026.
During his address at the conference, the Undersecretary underscored Iraq’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Forum member states to contribute to global gas market stability. He highlighted Iraq’s pivotal role in the oil, gas, and energy sectors both regionally and globally.
The Undersecretary elaborated on Iraq’s vast oil and gas resources, which position it as a major player in the international energy market. He emphasized the government’s efforts to develop gas fields and invest in gas associated with oil production. These strategic projects aim to expand liquefaction, storage, and export capabilities, transforming Iraq into a regional energy hub.
He further noted Iraq’s initiatives to develop industries complementary to the gas sector, such as petrochemicals, fertilizers, and electricity generation. These efforts are intended to maximize the added value of national resources and achieve sustainable economic development. Iraq is also progressing towards sustainability by adopting modern technologies to reduce emissions and expanding investments in renewable energy projects, including solar and wind energy.
