Basra: Southern Lebanon Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes and artillery targeted areas in southern Lebanon, while forces advanced into Kfarshouba. The UN peacekeeping force UNIFIL warned of the fragile situation and called for adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, southern Lebanon witnessed a new Israeli military escalation at dawn on Saturday, with Israeli airstrikes targeting the Mansouri area and artillery shelling hitting the Ali Taher heights. An Israeli explosion also occurred in the border town of Aita al-Jabal.

In a dangerous development, Israeli forces advanced into the eastern neighborhood of Kfarshouba, storming a house under construction in a residential area and raising an Israeli flag on it. This coincided with machine gun fire sweeps around residential buildings.

In this context, UNIFIL issued a statement confirming that the situation in southern Lebanon remains fragile, despite a decrease in the level of violence compared to earlier this year.

The international force explained: “The operational log recorded the firing of 1,030 projectiles between August 21 and 27 in southern Lebanon,” noting that the repercussions of the security situation are directly impacting civilians in the area.

UNIFIL stressed in its statement that “the commitment of all parties to UN Security Council Resolution 1701 remains an urgent necessity to reduce current tensions and restore lasting stability between Lebanon and Israel.”

It is worth noting that the Israeli website “Walla” revealed that Israel informed the United States, through security channels, that the plan for pilot zones in southern Lebanon had failed.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Naim Qassem, called on Arab and Islamic countries and their peoples on Friday evening to “unite and not stand idly by while enemies enter our region and their brothers suffer.”
