Beirut: Lebanese Justice Minister Adel Nassar announced on Tuesday the official abolition of the death penalty in the country. Speaking in the Lebanese Parliament during the vote on the law abolishing the death penalty, Nassar described the move as “historic.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Lebanese Parliament passed the law abolishing the death penalty, despite objections from Hezbollah bloc members who withdrew from the legislative session held in Beirut.

The law was passed during a general session held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as reported by Lebanese media. The Hezbollah bloc objected to the decision before leaving the session. The proposal to abolish the death penalty was on the session’s agenda along with a number of draft laws and proposals before Parliament voted on its approval.
