Media Authority Head Proposes Arab Mechanism for Monitoring Media Decisions

Cairo:Baghdad The head of the Media and Communications Commission, Baligh Abu Kulal, has called for the creation of an Arab mechanism to coordinate the efforts of information ministers and regulate digital content.

According to Iraqi News Agency, a statement from the Commission highlighted that Baligh Abu Kulal, the Chief Executive of the Communications and Media Commission, participated in the 23rd session of the Executive Bureau of the Council of Arab Information Ministers. This meeting was held at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo, with the delegation of the Republic of Iraq led by Hisham Al-Rikabi, a member of the Board of Commissioners.

During the session, Abu Kulal detailed the initiatives undertaken by Iraq to regulate the media sector, particularly focusing on the Communications and Media Commission’s strategies to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. These efforts include engagement with social media platforms to address prohibited content and actions against accounts that could harm Iraq’s relationships with Arab countries.

Abu Kulal proposed establishing an objective mechanism to monitor the implementation of decisions made by the Council of Arab Information Ministers. This mechanism would ensure that recommendations and resolutions are effectively translated into actions that can be tracked and evaluated, enhancing the effectiveness of joint Arab media efforts and achieving their organizational and professional goals.

The statement also underscored the importance of adhering to the Arab Media Action Charter. It advocated for adopting this charter as a reference framework for engaging with social media platforms to support the coordination of Arab positions on challenges related to digital content and to strengthen cooperation with the companies that manage these platforms.
