Baghdad: The Director General of Electricity Production in the Middle Euphrates and his office manager have been sentenced to six years in prison on charges related to bribery. The Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court handed down the sentences, marking a significant move in the ongoing efforts to combat corruption within Iraq’s public sector.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Supreme Judicial Council released a statement detailing that the two officials were found guilty of accepting bribes. These bribes were linked to the release of payments owed to a company that had been contracted by the Middle Euphrates General Company for Electricity Production.

The court’s decision was based on Article 2/1 of Resolution 160 of 1983, as amended, and was further supported by Articles 47, 48, and 49 of the Penal Code. This ruling underscores the judiciary’s commitment to addressing corruption within critical government sectors, including electricity production, which is vital for the country’s infrastructure and development.
