Military Forces from Syria’s New Government Enter Afrin Region

Damascus: Syrian media reported today that forces affiliated with the General Security Department have entered the Afrin region in northern Syria, aiming to “enhance security in the region, amid a massive reception from the residents.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Afrin region had been under the control of the “Syrian Interim Government” in Idlib Governorate, supported by Turkey, since 2018. This changed when “General Security” forces arrived from the capital, Damascus, taking over security responsibilities.

These forces have now assumed control of the security file in the countryside areas of Aleppo, Afrin, Azaz, Jarablus, and Manbij, marking a significant shift in the region’s governance and security landscape.
