Minister of Environment Highlights Crucial Role of Academic Partnerships in Environmental Legislation Development


Baghdad: Iraqi Minister of Environment, Sarwa Abdul Wahid, praised the academic and research role of the American University in Iraq – Baghdad, emphasizing that “partnerships with scientific and research institutions represent a fundamental pillar for supporting national efforts in confronting environmental and climate challenges and developing national legislation in line with international agreements.”



According to National Iraqi News Agency, during her meeting with the President of the American University, Dr. Bradley-J. Cook, Abdul Wahid discussed ways to activate and sustain joint cooperation between the Ministry and the University, building upon previous areas of collaboration to support environmental work in Iraq.



The University delegation reviewed the activities of its Water and Climate Change Center, a specialized research center for studies related to water, climate change, and the environment, affirming the University’s commitment to expanding cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and leveraging its research and academic expertise to address environmental issues.



The delegation also presented a study on developing environmental legislation in Iraq and mechanisms for aligning it with international agreements, contributing to strengthening the environmental legislative framework and supporting Iraq’s international obligations.



The minister emphasized the importance of leveraging academic expertise and specialized research centers to support national environmental policies, praising the university’s contributions in preparing scientific studies that contribute to developing the environmental system and enhancing Iraq’s ability to confront climate challenges.
