Baghdad: The Ministry of Electricity has categorically denied recent reports regarding a gas agreement with Turkmenistan, clarifying that the contract has not yet been activated. The ministry emphasized that ongoing negotiations are underway to select an intermediary company to facilitate the delivery of Turkmen gas to Iraq.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the ministry issued a statement dismissing claims that Iraq is paying daily amounts to Turkmenistan. It stated that no Turkmen gas has been delivered to Iraq, nor have any financial transactions been made. The ministry took full responsibility for refuting statements suggesting daily payments of two million dollars, describing such reports as misleading attempts to sway public opinion.

The statement further clarified that the current gas shortage in Iraq is linked to a separate agreement with Iran, not Turkmenistan. The ministry reiterated its commitment to a strategy focused on diversifying fuel sources to ensure energy security and safeguard public funds.

Moreover, the ministry asserted its intention to pursue legal action against media outlets disseminating false information that could potentially disrupt the Iraqi government’s efforts to diversify its energy sources. It urged media entities to verify information through official channels to prevent any harm to public interest.
