Baghdad: The Ministry of Labor and the Imam Hussein Shrine are in discussions to launch a unified dictionary tailored for sign language users. This initiative aims to streamline communication for individuals with hearing impairments across Iraq.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Dhikra Abdul Rahim, who heads the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Special Needs at the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, has engaged with Basim Al-Atwani. Al-Atwani, an international sign language expert and director of the Imam Hussein Specialized Academy for the Deaf, is affiliated with the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussein. Together, they are working on preparing an updated Iraqi sign language dictionary. This resource is intended for distribution to various state institutions and institutes dedicated to persons with disabilities.

Abdul Rahim emphasized that unifying sign language is crucial for ensuring effective communication and safeguarding the rights of deaf individuals. She underscored the importance of adhering to international standards and agreements, while also highlighting the need for training the Commission’s staff in sign language.

The Commission has assigned Al-Atwani the task of preparing a comprehensive technical and financial study concerning the project. During their meeting, discussions also encompassed the activation of a cooperation protocol with the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussein. Moreover, they explored the expansion of training and economic empowerment programs, aiming to open broader opportunities for persons with disabilities.
