MoJ Wins $1 Billion Arbitration Case for Iraq Against German Firm AHG

Baghdad: The Ministry of Justice, represented by the Legal Department, has successfully settled an international arbitration dispute in favor of the Republic of Iraq. This follows a decision to reject the lawsuit filed by the German company AHG, which had sought financial compensation of one billion dollars before the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). The dispute was centered around a contract to rehabilitate and operate the Kirkuk Cement Plant between the Iraqi General Cement Company and the German companies AHG, the Middle East, and Salah al-Din Holding.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Director General of the Legal Department, Haitham Mohi Radhi, detailed the ministry’s involvement in the case since 2018. This included intensive legal sessions and procedures that culminated in the arbitration panel’s decision to reject the lawsuit and the claims made by the German company.

He emphasized that this decision marks a significant legal victory, highlighting the Ministry of Justice’s efforts and the direct involvement of the Minister of Justice, Khaled Shawani, in safeguarding Iraq’s rights on the international stage and defending them in global judicial forums.
