Baghdad: The Parliamentary Integrity Committee has issued a warning about a potential “catastrophe” stemming from the draft amendment to the current amnesty law, which controversially includes provisions for pardoning thieves and embezzlers while allowing drug use in amounts up to 50 grams.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Committee member MP Sarwa Abdul Wahid expressed her concerns through a post on the (X) platform. She highlighted that while there are critical laws impacting Iraqi families, there appears to be a lack of responsibility towards these legislative measures. Abdul Wahid specifically pointed out the contentious Personal Status Law, which faced significant societal opposition, yet lawmakers persist in pushing it forward, marking it as potentially the first law to be enforced retroactively.

Abdul Wahid further elaborated on the amnesty law’s implications, emphasizing its role in addressing injustices and compensating victims of false accusations. However, she also labeled the law as a di
saster due to its provisions that permit drug use and grant amnesty to those guilty of theft and embezzlement. She also noted that boycotting elections and the absence of genuine representation have led to a parliament that lacks diversity in political perspectives.
