Nasiriyah: Minister of Transport Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi announced during a visit to the Nasiriyah International Airport project in Dhi Qar Governorate that the airport is on track to open by the end of this year. Accompanied by airport director Ali Al-Gharabi, ministry officials, and representatives from the implementing and consulting companies, Al-Saadawi reviewed construction work and progress rates.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Minister chaired a meeting to discuss various airport-related files, emphasizing the importance of ongoing field visits for direct follow-up. These visits aim to ensure smooth operations and address any arising challenges promptly.

During his tour, Al-Saadawi described the airport as a significant strategic service project. He highlighted its role as the sole air outlet for the governorate, designed to international standards for both internal and external air freight, along with transportation services. He confirmed that the project’s completion rate is proje
cted to reach nearly 90%, with the installation of modern navigation equipment and systems.

Al-Saadawi noted that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani is closely monitoring the project due to its strategic and developmental significance. The airport is expected to boost the local economy, create job opportunities, and enhance the tourism and investment sectors in southern Iraq.

Financial challenges have been addressed through government follow-up, ensuring no delays in work continuity. Equipment and devices have been sourced from countries like Italy, Austria, Finland, and France to ensure safe and precise operation.

The project includes various facilities in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. These include a large passenger terminal with a capacity for 750,000 passengers annually, expandable to 2.5 million in ten years, a main runway, a control tower, a VIP building, and other essential infrastructure to support aviation safety standards.
