London: Tottenham Hotspur suffered their second consecutive defeat in the English Premier League, falling 2-0 at home to Newcastle United in their match on Saturday evening, part of the second round of the competition.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, with this result, Tottenham remain at the bottom of the table with zero points, having also failed to score in their first two matches. Newcastle, meanwhile, raised their tally to four points after their 2-2 draw against Liverpool in the opening round, temporarily moving into third place.

The match saw the debut of Egyptian international Omar Marmoush in a Tottenham shirt, as he started and played the full 90 minutes, following his loan move from Manchester City on Thursday.

Newcastle applied significant pressure on the home side at the beginning of the match, before Tottenham gradually regained their composure and began to create chances, though they were unable to find the net.

Frenchman Matthijs Till almost opened the scoring for Tottenham in the 15th minute, but Newcastle’s Czech goalkeeper, Lukas Hornicek, made a fine save from his powerful shot. Spaniard Pedro Porro then squandered another opportunity after a scramble in the penalty area in the 17th minute.

Tottenham continued to press, with Hornicek denying Scottish midfielder Andy Robertson in the 36th minute, before making another excellent save a minute later from a header by Dutchman Jan Paul van Heck, leaving the score 0-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Newcastle finally broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute when Swede Anthony Illanga received a pass from Bosnian Amar Dedic inside the penalty area and fired a shot that struck the right post before nestling in the net.

Newcastle didn’t have to wait long to extend their lead, as Congolese striker Yoane Wissa added a second goal in the 72nd minute with a spectacular acrobatic volley from a corner, sealing the victory for Matthias J¤issle’s side.

With this victory, Newcastle continued their positive start to the new season, while Tottenham’s struggles deepened. The club, which spent heavily to bolster its squad with new players under Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi, is now facing mounting pressure to turn their fortunes around.
