Columbia: Police in Columbia, South Carolina, announced that one of their officers was killed and another wounded, along with a suspect, during a shootout that occurred Saturday near a park in the city.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Columbia Police Chief William Holbrook said at a press conference today that the incident began after police responded to a report of a dispute between two individuals. An officer located the suspect near a vehicle matching the description provided, and another officer arrived at the scene to provide backup.

He added that the exchange of gunfire resulted in the death of one officer and the wounding of the other, whose condition is described as stable. The suspect was also killed.

The South Carolina Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident, and police confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Data from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) indicates that law enforcement officers continue to face high rates of assault while on duty. Security agencies recorded 90,178 assaults on officers in 2025, the highest rate in ten years, while 53 officers were intentionally killed in the line of duty. Firearms were the most commonly used weapon in these killings.
