Baghdad:Strait of Hormuz: An oil tanker and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker were reportedly targeted by projectiles while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, as announced by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
According to the National Iraqi News Agency, the agency received delayed reports indicating that a crude oil tanker was hit on its port side by an unidentified projectile. A separate report detailed a similar incident involving an LNG tanker, both occurring in the strategic waterway.
The UKMTO has classified these incidents as “attacks” and advised vessels in the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities. The agency did not provide details on the damage or casualties, nor did it identify the source of the projectiles. Additionally, there was no disclosure of the tankers’ destination, cargo, ownership, or flag.
These attacks come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States over control of the shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy and commodity supplies. Recently, the Iranian armed forces reported intercepting 19 vessels attempting to transit the strait outside Tehran’s designated shipping lanes. The strait remains a contentious point in negotiations between Tehran and Washington, with both nations asserting control over its maritime traffic.
