Basra: The Ministry of Oil has announced plans to increase gas recovery at the Nahr Bin Umar field to 300 million cubic feet per day.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the media office of the Undersecretary for Gas Affairs stated that Undersecretary Izzat Sabir Ismail chaired an extensive meeting to review plans and projects for gas recovery at the Nahr Bin Umar field in Basra Governorate. The meeting was attended by representatives from the South Gas Company and the Planning and Follow-up Department, alongside the project operator, Halfaya Gas Company.

The statement added that the meeting addressed the implementation stages of the associated gas recovery project at the field, as well as development plans aimed at raising gas recovery rates to 300 million standard cubic feet per day. This is to be achieved through two phases, each with a capacity of 150 million standard cubic feet per day.

The Undersecretary emphasized the importance of expediting the completion of the project’s technical and operat
ional requirements and adhering to established timelines. These measures aim to maximize the recovery of produced gas, reduce flaring, and support the needs of the energy sector and related industries.

The statement noted that the meeting also discussed completion rates, requirements for executing the two phases, and coordination mechanisms between the relevant authorities and the operating company, with the goal of overcoming challenges and accelerating the integration of new capacities into the gas recovery system.

It is noteworthy that the contract for the investment, development, and processing of gas at the Nahr Bin Umar field was awarded to Halfaya Gas Company Limited. The agreement was signed on January 7, 2024, between South Gas Company and Halfaya Gas Company, with an initial capacity of 150 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) in the first phase and the potential to add another 150 MMSCFD in the second phase, bringing the total planned capacity to 300 MMSCFD.
