Muscat: Oman and Iran are in talks to establish a temporary shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, as part of a proposed phased framework. The Sultanate of Oman and Iran are exploring an interim framework aimed at resuming safe navigation in the strategic waterway, emphasizing the preservation of sovereignty and sovereign rights.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi visited the Islamic Republic of Iran to hold consultations with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. The discussions focused on creating a practical basis to address challenges in the Strait, exacerbated by recent conflicts and their consequences.

The joint statement revealed plans for a joint temporary shipping corridor and a collaborative project to clear the Strait of mines. Technical negotiations are ongoing to establish a permanent corridor and manage the Strait effectively, including mechanisms for information exchange and navigation management.

Both nations stressed the importance of engaging Gulf states in these discussions, highlighting adherence to international law and respect for coastal states’ sovereign rights.
