Baghdad:Parliament Speaker Heibat Al-Halbousi emphasized that the conclusion of military missions in Iraq signals a shift to a new phase of cooperative relations, characterized by partnership, mutual respect, and shared interests.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Halbousi addressed the “Sovereignty Day” conference, attended by key figures including the Prime Minister and the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. He noted that the end of the US and International Coalition military missions in Iraq should be viewed as a moment of responsibility, not just celebration.
Al-Halbousi stressed that the withdrawal of foreign forces must reflect Iraq’s strengthened state capabilities and not create a void exploitable by terrorism or foreign interference. He called for the fortification of state institutions, enhancement of security forces, and engagement of all Iraqis in shaping their future.
Reflecting on past experiences, he warned against repeating mistakes that led to security vacuums exploited by terrorism. He underscored that stability depends on strong state institutions and community resilience, as demonstrated in the fight against ISIS.
The Speaker highlighted the importance of justice for liberated areas, emphasizing reconstruction and support for affected residents as crucial to preventing extremism. He insisted on compensating victims of terrorism and military operations, asserting the state’s duty to support citizens who have defended the homeland.
Al-Halbousi articulated that true sovereignty involves decisive governance, rule of law, and state control over arms, with Parliament supporting measures to strengthen state security and development.
He assured Iraqis of the nation’s triumph over terrorism, expressing gratitude to allies who aided Iraq in its fight, and reiterated the transition to a cooperative phase while safeguarding Iraq’s sovereignty and national decision-making.
