PKK Proposes Dissolution in Exchange for Leader’s Release

Ankara: The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has proposed to the Turkish authorities the release of its leader, Abdullah Ocalan, in exchange for the party's dissolution and the laying down of its weapons. This bold proposal was made public through a statement released by the PKK Executive Committee.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the PKK Executive Committee emphasized its commitment to the proposal, stating, "We declare that we will abide by the requirements of the call and implement them on our part, but nevertheless, it is necessary to ensure the achievement of democratic political conditions and the legal ground as well to ensure success." The statement further elaborated on the party's intention to initiate a ceasefire, highlighting that no armed operations would be conducted unless provoked by attacks.

The PKK's Executive Committee emphasized that the process of laying down weapons requires the practical leadership of Abdullah Ocalan, known as Leader Apo within the organization. The statement mentioned that for the conference's success, Ocalan must personally manage it, as he is seen as the only figure capable of steering the era of peace and democratic society.

This proposal follows Ocalan's call for the party to convene a general conference and consider its dissolution, with him shouldering the historical responsibility for such a decision. Ocalan's statement underscored the enduring alliance between Turks and Kurds over a thousand years, emphasizing the necessity of voluntary cooperation against dominant powers.

Ocalan also stressed the importance of a democratic society, dismissing solutions based on extreme nationalism, such as establishing separate nation-states or seeking federalism and autonomy, as inadequate for addressing the historical social rights of society.
